12 Age-appropriate Chores For Young Kids

In today’s post, I will be sharing 12 age-appropriate chores for young kids that you can give your children to help out in and around the home. Giving them chores from a young age teaches them independence, how to build self-esteem and it prepares them for coping with the demands of society once they enter adulthood.

My little one has been doing chores since a very young age. We just gave him simple tasks like throwing his dirty laundry in the basket, or throwing his candy wrappers in the bin. And it has paid off. He is always eager to help out at home, and his school reports always mention what a helpful and well behaved child he is at school. And that makes this mom really proud because I was raised in the same way.

By doing chores, kids learn how to become more self-confident and take pride once they accomplish an assigned task. They also learn empathy when sharing responsibilities with other children at school or at home. Chores are excellent tools for ascertaining routine and preventing any disagreements or confusion among siblings at home or other toddlers at school.

It is essential to keep in mind that not all children develop at the same pace, so while some kids might be ready for chores, others might still need a little help or support when performing tasks. Begin with one or two assigned chores to avoid overwhelming them or making them feel like too much pressure is placed on them. The primary goal is to assign chores that they can manage and complete successfully without feeling overwhelmed.

Bear in mind, they are not grown-ups, and completing tasks might be a whole lot messier, so don’t expect perfection. Remember to always give praise and show appreciation for their efforts. Remain patient and give gentle guidance where needed. Here are some age-appropriate chores for young kids.

  1. Packing away books and toys after use. Remember to assign specific places for their belongings i.e., bookshelf, toy box, etc.
  2. Putting dirty laundry in the laundry basket in the morning or after bath time.
  3. Helping mom to wipe the table after a meal. It might seem like a simple task, but they will definitely love doing it.
  4. Wiping or dusting. You can make it a fun exercise by making a hand puppet that “collects dust bunnies”.
  5. Giving mom or dad a hand with unpacking groceries. My son loves to pack away toilet rolls in the bathroom.
  6. Helping mom to hang washing. My son hands me the items to hang and afterwards he hands the folded laundry to me to pack away.
  7. Kids love sweeping the floor with child-sized brooms and dustpans.
  8. Helping with making the bed. My son always helps me with this. Even though he is only five and still a bit clumsy, he enjoys helping me to make the bed.
  9. Cleaning up messes or spills with a sponge or cloth.
  10. Watering plants – we have planted a few flowers in pots for my boy and he takes great care of them. He waters them every second day or so.
  11. Pushing buttons – this might sound strange, but kids love pressing buttons i.e., starting the washing cycle or drying cycle on the washing machine and dryer, elevator buttons, etc.
  12. Helping out in the kitchen. My son loves to sit on the counter next to me while preparing food or baking. When I bake muffins or cupcakes, I let him pour and mix the ingredients.
