I must say I sometimes surprise myself with the amount of work I get done in a week. And then I get those weeks where it feels like I’ve hardly made any progress.

1. Write Everything Down
Organizing and planning do not necessarily mean that you have to cram as many things as possible into a single day or week. It is more about being realistic about what you can or cannot do and planning your days around that. I like to make lists or scribble in my diary, and as I complete tasks, I draw a line through them. I’m also one of those people that has a budget and a shopping list.
Everything goes into my budget, whether I’m making R500 or R10 000 a month. It doesn’t really matter. I make sure that I include everything in there, even bank fees. When it comes to finances, I don’t like any unexpected surprises, and I need to know before the time what I can pay for and whatnot. I also look at different websites for specials each month and then plan my grocery shopping around that. Other things you can make lists for include:
- Weekly recipes
- Household items that are almost finished
- Daily or weekly chores/errands
- Important meetings/appointments
2. Prioritize
Without prioritizing, I would most probably not get anything done. I am currently a full-time working mom, freelance content writer/editor/website owner, and I format and publish articles for some of my clients. If I don’t plan my time well and prioritize which jobs get done first, there’s no way I would be able to keep everyone happy.
Communication is key. Sometimes life happens, especially if you have a family. No matter how well you plan, sometimes you cannot stick to commitments you’ve already made. And that is ok, but be transparent about it and keep your clients in the loop.
3. Use an App For Grocery Deliveries
Since I’ve started using the Checkers Sixty app, my life has changed for the better. Before heading home, I don’t have to worry about stopping at the grocery store first. Not only does it save time, it is convenient. Most days, I don’t even have the energy to go shopping and wait in a queue after a long day at the office.

4. Get Your Family To Help Out
Just because you’re Mom, it doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. Get the little ones to pitch in as well, and don’t forget to recognize their efforts. They can help with chores like doing the dishes, pack away the laundry, or take out the trash. My son is only five now, but he helps with handing me clothing pieces when I’m hanging the laundry or folding it after I’ve tumbled dried it. He also puts his dishes in the sink and throws away his sweetie wrappers.
5. Forget About Perfection
There is no such thing as being perfect or doing everything perfectly, especially if you’re a mom. We can be so hard on ourselves, but we do what we think is best. We can’t be supermoms, sex goddesses in the bedroom, supermodels, and working moms. Pat yourself on the shoulder every now and again, or look in the mirror and tell yourself: Well done! You are doing the best that you can.
6. Try To Do Some Chores Immediately
It helps to clean as you go. I make a point to wash the dishes shortly after a meal which means it is done and out of the way. If I go and sit down, I usually don’t have the energy to tackle it later. When I have a few minutes to spare, I quickly sweep and mop the floor. On weekends, I do more thorough cleaning when I have more time.
