Hair loss is a common occurrence for many people and in this post, I will be sharing my favourite essential oils for promoting hair growth with you. Hair loss can be caused by various life vicissitudes, such as protein deficiency, emotional trauma, hormonal fluctuations due to puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, or because of illness. Several health issues like iron deficiency anaemia, secondary syphilis, and thyroid disease can lead to hair loss.
Essential oils for hair growth
I find the topic of essential oils incredibly interesting. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for health-related and beauty-related issues alike. For instance, eucalyptus pure essential oil is an excellent stress-reliever and mood enhancer, while peppermint oil can help with tension headaches or a good friend of mine gave me the remedy of adding a drop of peppermint oil underneath my pillow to open my airways and chest during the night. I have also done this for my baby when I did not have Karvol on hand. However, did you know that essential oils can be used for promoting hair growth too? You do not have to resort to expensive shop-bought products that contains unhealthy chemicals and other toxic ingredients.
- Please note: essential oils are potent and must be mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil when used for topical application. Essential oils must never be ingested.
1. Rosemary essential oil
Rosemary is typically used in the kitchen, rather than beauty-related issues. However, using a few drops right before your next bath or shower can make all the difference. If you massage rosemary oil into your scalp on a daily basis, it can assist with hair growth, plus it can help with prevention of hair loss. Rosemary essential oil is ideal for stimulating, repairing, and regulating hair cells.
Instructions for use:
Blend two to three drops with a handful of almond or coconut oil (also excellent for hair health) and massage it into your scalp for a few minutes prior to shampooing it out. Apply two times a week.
2. Lavender essential oil
Lavender is known for its calming and soothing effect on mind and body; however, it is ideal for your scalp too. This essential oil is advantageous for several applications. Due to its unique composition, it can be used for various skin-related issues as well as promoting hair growth. This oil can be used more regularly due to its gentle nature.
Instructions for use:
Blend three drops with a handful of any carrier oil or alternatively, add one drop to your shampoo. You can apply it a few times per week.
3. Cedarwood
Apart from being a wonderful calming substance, cedarwood is another great choice for hair growth. This essential oil stimulates hair follicles by boosting blood flow to your scalp. Cedarwood can reduce hair loss, assist with hair thinning and alopecia, as well as promote hair growth.
Instructions for use:
Add two drops of the oil to coconut oil and gently massage into the scalp. Leave it for about fifteen minutes prior to shampooing.
4. Tea tree essential oil
Tea tree oil has numerous uses, including cleaning the scalp due to its cleansing components. It is a known oil used for combatting infections. Tea tree oil assists with opening clogged hair follicles, therefore promoting hair growth.
Instructions for use:
Tea tree oil must be diluted well since it can cause skin irritation. Blend twelve drops into your shampoo and use it as normal.
5. Peppermint essential oil
Not only is peppermint essential oil effective for massaging your temples and neck to relieve tension, it can also be massaged into the scalp. The cooling effect on the skin boosts local circulation and it is a perfect choice for stimulating hair follicles to improve hair growth.
Instructions for use:
Mix a drop of the oil with a handful of coconut oil and massage into your scalp. Never leave it for more than five minutes before rinsing it out with shampoo. You can apply it twice weekly.
Using essential oils correctly
Always ensure you are buying 100% pure essential oils. Essential oils are not safe for consumption and can be toxic even if small amounts were ingested. If you use undiluted oils in your nostrils or on sensitive skin it can cause skin rash and allergic reaction. Essential oils are absorbed rapidly and symptoms can start developing as promptly as thirty minutes after ingestion. The symptoms could be delayed for up to four hours after exposure. The toxicity is contingent on the type of essential oil you have ingested. Children are especially at risk. A small amount of 2ml of eucalyptus oil can cause severe poisoning in a baby. Symptoms of poisoning include:
- Slow, shallow breathing, drowsiness, or coma after large dose.
- Seizures.
- Persistent coughing, choking, shortness of breath, gagging, wheezing.
- Skin irritation after skin exposure.
- Vomiting, diarrhoea, or nausea.
- Irritation or pain and eye redness after eye exposure.
Conclusion
The key with incorporating essential oils for promoting hair growth is to remain patient and be consistent. Always ensure you have enough information about essential oils before you start using them.
